Your credit report and rating are used as bases for loan approvals and interest ratings. It is advisable to regularly check your credit report for any inaccuracy. If you find an inaccuracy, you can file a request for dispute to correct it. Here are the steps in doing that:
Inform the creditor
You can contact the creditor who is responsible for the inaccuracy. You can find the contact information on your credit report.
Deal with credit reporting agencies
You can also dispute the inaccuracy through credit reporting agencies such as Equifax and TransUnion, whichever issued your credit report. With TransUnion, you must write a letter explaining the inaccuracies. In your letter, include the following information: full name, complete mailing address, telephone number, birthdate, name, and account number of the creditor in question, reason for your disagreement with the inaccuracy, and your signature. You must attach copies of documents that can support your request. You may also include a copy of your credit report and mark the items in question. Do not forget to keep a copy of your letter and attached documents. Send your letter through certified mail.
With Equifax, you must first complete a Consumer Credit Report Update Form. You can then contact them through telephone or mail. You will be requested to include documents in updating your credit report and verifying your request.
Once the credit reporting agencies receive your request for dispute, an investigation will begin. After the investigation, if revisions were made to your credit report, you will be notified by the credit reporting agency. A revised credit report will be sent to you and to any company who requested your credit report 60 days before the change was made.
Always check your credit report for any inaccuracy. If you find one, do not hesitate to file a request for dispute.
Your Credit Score is the single most important factor any Creditor will look at when deciding on whether or not to provide you with anything from a small personal loan on up to a Mortgage.
